What Is a VBAC Birth? Understanding Your Options After Caesarean

Many women who have previously had a caesarean wonder whether they can give birth vaginally next time. What is a VBAC birth – and is it safe? VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Caesarean, and for many women it’s a safe, empowering option when supported by the right medical care.

Who Can Consider a VBAC Birth?

The decision depends on your previous pregnancy and the type of caesarean incision used. Women who had a low transverse (horizontal) incision and an uncomplicated recovery are often good candidates for what is a VBAC birth. Success rates are high – around 70–80 per cent – when managed in a hospital setting with experienced obstetric care.

Your gynaecologist will consider factors like the reason for your previous caesarean, your current pregnancy health, and whether labour starts naturally. VBAC is generally recommended only in hospitals equipped for emergency caesarean if required.

Benefits and Considerations

A successful VBAC can mean a shorter recovery, lower infection risk and fewer complications in future pregnancies. However, there are small risks – including uterine rupture – so continuous monitoring and careful planning are essential.

Some women may be better suited to an elective caesarean, particularly if they’ve had multiple prior surgeries or other medical concerns. The key is an open, informed discussion with your obstetrician.
