Obstetrics covers pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum (the first six weeks after childbirth). Comprehensive services offered by Dr Gomez range from preconception counselling and regular antenatal care checkups to ensure the health of yourself and your baby during pregnancy, to advice and support regarding birthing options, and the provision of personalised postnatal care. Please see below for more details.

Multiple pregnancy

Multiple pregnancies are becoming more common than in the past, with twins accounting for over 90 per cent of cases. The likelihood of giving birth to twins increases with the age of the mother due to higher levels of oestrogen which stimulates the ovaries to produce more than one egg at a time.

Assisted reproductive techniques are also a contributing factor, as fertility drugs stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs and this can lead to several eggs being released per ovulation. Heredity and ancestry also play a role.

Multiple pregnancies tend to lead to more frequent complications for the mother and babies, such as severe persistent morning sickness, high blood pressure and early onset of labour. For this reason regular antenatal care and close monitoring is important, and you may have to make changes in your diet to meet your body’s additional nutritional needs. Dr Gomez and his team can provide all the necessary care, advice and support to assist you throughout this period.

Dr Gomez will carefully monitor your progress during each trimester and advise accordingly.
