Finding a cyst on your ovary during a pelvic exam or on an imaging test such as pelvic ultrasound can come as a shock and cause concern. Thankfully most cysts are benign but an assessment by a trained gynaecologist is important to exclude ovarian cancer. Ovarian cysts present in many ways. Some of the symptoms you may experience include pain and/or bloating. Some cysts do not cause any symptoms but do require treatment or follow up. Dr Gomez will review your ultrasounds, evaluate the cyst and organise blood tests (including tumour markers) and further imaging to determine how best the cyst should be managed. Treatment will vary depending on your age, symptoms, family history and the type, size and sonographic features of the cyst. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery can often be performed to remove cysts.
